Liquid crystal display (LCD) technology is used every day, whether you realize it or not. It is used in computer monitors, microwave ovens, clocks, calculators, and MP3 players. Liquid crystal technology is also used in flat screen television sets and computer monitors. LCDs produce very clear, high resolution images.
The way liquid crystal displays work is by obstructing light. Inside the screen, liquid crystals are held between two pieces of polarized glass. The crystals act to control the brightness of light transmitted through the glass. When an electrical charge is applied, the crystals rotate to allow certain amount of light to pass through the sheets of glass. The display is made of thousands of pixels, and is lit by a fluorescent bulb that aims white light through the glass. Each pixel is further divided into red, green, and blue sections. These sections work together to produce a color image. Each pixel is capable of producing 16 million colors.
Consumers love LCD screens for their many benefits. LCD displays offer greater brightness and contrast, well beyond what you see with a conventional cathode ray tube television. Flat screens are also easier to view from angles other than head-on because they have a viewing angle of 160 degrees. That means that if your family is watching a program together, everyone will have a good view. The contrast and image quality are so good with LCD televisions that it isn’t necessary to dim the lights to enjoy the picture. Another convenience is that lamps don’t produce spots of glare on a flat screen the way they do with traditional sets.
Most LCD televisions come equipped with speakers and tuners. Therefore, all you need to do is plug it in and turn it on. Because the speakers and tuners are part of the unit, you won’t have to worry about setting up other components like receivers. That makes LCD televisions better for homes that don’t have a lot of room to spare.
You can still use an LCD television to watch regular television. It doesn’t have to be high definition. LCD televisions can work as computer monitors as well as televisions. They are also flexible enough to handle any video format, with inputs for S-video, composite video, and component video.
The typical LCD will last through about 20 years of viewing, so you won’t be faced with replacing it within a year or two. This is longer than plasma screen televisions last. One critical factor in LCD television sets is the bulb. The bulb directly affects picture and color quality. While some sets have bulbs that can be replaced, others have bulbs that are built into the liquid crystal system. This makes it complicated to replace the light source. This is something you should definitely check into before buying.
